Autism: Reading Comprehension LARGE Task Cards EMOTIONS & FEELINGS

This popular series continues on with EMOTIONS & FEELINGS in text for reading comprehension. Our students are enjoying this learning activity immensely and are making considerable reading comprehension gains! They love “turning the pages” to read and find the picture situation that matches what they have just read. The real-life picture task cards go beyond the typical emotions pictures, but include body language, as well as the opportunity for students to understand what emotion the person is feeling just by reading the text. This differentiated set not only covers our more common emotions and scenarios in which they might occur, but also touches upon some “subject sensitive” issues, such as, parents arguing, teenage acne, being yelled at by a parent, and toileting mishaps for older children. Use these specific task cards at your own discretion. I have included 33 cards in this set, just in case you do not want to touch on these topics with your students. Since our students can find themselves in these types of situations, I felt it was important to provide the option for you. Always making good use of sight words and common nouns when possible, these text rich task cards allow even your youngest readers to participate, too!

This set includes 33 LARGE real-life scenario task cards and data sheets to record progress towards IEP goal mastery. Many of the task cards contain substantial text, always making use of sight words and common nouns. Some recommendations on how to use this activity are:

* FOR NON-READERS: Use as one-on-one instruction by reading each "page" aloud. Even non-readers will be able to identify the emotions and body language presented.

* FOR READERS: Have student read each card aloud or silently to demonstrate comprehension. Once completed, you can check the cards for accuracy. This makes a wonderful independent work task!

* FOR LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT: Read aloud or have student read text. Ask "wh" questions related to each scenario. Have students expand upon how the person feels and how they might feel if they were put in the same situation.

* FOR WRITING: Use the task card scenarios as extended writing prompts.

By MONTH, YEAR, given task cards containing scenarios with text descriptions which represent emotions and feelings, STUDENT will choose the 2 correct picture answer cards with 80% accuracy, in 4 out of 5 consecutive opportunities.
