Autism Social Story: Okay/Not Okay To Put In Your Mouth (Data Sheets/File Folder Lesson/Worksheets)

Many of our students with autism crave sensory input. With those needs, some students may place non-edible items in their mouth. Not only is this unhealthy, but can impact their learning time, as well. Here is a social story to help your kids understand what is acceptable to put in their mouths (edible), and what is not (non-edible). I have included two sets of social stories; one with real-life pictures of a boy, the other a girl. You do not need to print both unless you would like both sets. As a follow-up lesson to reinforce edible and non-edible items, there are 3 worksheets and a sorting file folder lesson “What is Okay/Not Okay To Put In My Mouth”. To document understanding of the social story and as support for IEP Goal mastery in the area of Independent Functioning, a data sheet is included with questions for the teacher/para to review with the student. The recording process is simple, as only a “+” or “-“ symbol is necessary.

SUGGESTED IEP GOAL ALIGNMENT:
Given a social story and follow-up materials (worksheets, file folder activity) to reinforce the health and safety aspects of what is edible and non-edible, STUDENT will provide appropriate responses to questions asked by an adult and complete follow-up lessons, with 80% accuracy, in 4 out of 5 consecutive opportunities, by MONTH, YEAR.

Thank you…and enjoy!
