Building sentences with real-life pictures about community helpers make sentence building fun for students with autism and special learning needs!

This COMMUNITY HELPERS Visual Sentence Building activity for early readers, encourages language development and teaches students how to form sentences on their own!

This COMMUNITY HELPERS Visual Sentence Building activity contains the following people (“who”), settings (“where”), and things associated with the profession (“what”):

• Doctor: operating room, patient’s room, clinic, hospital/thermometer, stethoscope, otoscope, xray

• Teacher: classroom, school cafeteria, school playground, a student’s desk/a report card, pencils to write with, books to read, a scissor

• Firefighter: the tree to help the cat, the forest fire, the fire station, the fire truck, the big fire/an axe, a fire hose, a fire extinguisher, a fire helmet

• Police Officer: the police car, the police station, the jail cell, a school to help students/a traffic ticket, a badge, a police dog, handcuffs

• Trash Collector: the neighborhood, the landfill, the office building, the garbage truck/a pick up schedule, a vest and hat, a trash can, gloves to wear

• Construction Worker: the new house, the apartment building, the brick wall, the bulldozer, construction site/ a tool belt, a wrench, a hammer, a hard hat

• Pilot: the airplane, the airport, the cockpit, the hangar/ a uniform, a passport, a badge, a suitcase

• Veterinarian: the exam room, the kennel, the farm to help a horse, the scale to weigh the cat/ a magnifying glass, a pet carrier, a leash, a nail clipper

• Farmer: the tractor in the field, the farm, the barn, the field/ vegetables that he grew, an irrigation system, a bale of hay, a tractor

• Chef: the table, the kitchen, the restaurant, the sink/ a soup ladle, an oven mitt, a white hat, pots and pans

• Mail Carrier: the mailbox to pick up the mail, the mailroom, the mail delivery truck, the post office/ a mail bag, a stamp, a note for you, mail for you

The “when” sentence building cards are interchangeable for all community helpers and include:

Each COMMUNITY HELPER set includes picture/word/phrase sentence building cards for present/past/future tense (is at/went to/will go to). This set also includes a universal picture for “has”, or you may choose to use the picture showing each community helper’s hands.

• Please note: This is an activity that you will share with your students for many years. You will need to print on white card stock and laminate. This is not a worksheet set, rather a “hands-on” learning activity to aid in sentence comprehension, sentence building, language development and vocabulary skills.

SUGGESTED IEP GOAL ALIGNMENT:
1. Given a picture depicting “who” (a community helper) and a present, future, or past tense activity “when”, STUDENT will complete the sentence by reading or saying what is happening in the complete set of pictures, in order to state a complete sentence or explanation of events, with 80% accuracy, in 4 out of 5 opportunities, by MONTH, YEAR.

2. Given a labeled picture of a familiar community helper, STUDENT will say or type three words to describe who the person is and what the person’s job responsibilities are, with 80% accuracy, in 4 out of 5 opportunities, by MONTH, YEAR.

3. Given a sentence building activity related to community helpers, STUDENT will independently build a sentence which tells who, where, and when descriptors, with 80% accuracy, in 4 out of 5 opportunities, by MONTH, YEAR.

4. Given two visual sentences related to a topic (community helpers), STUDENT will provide two verbal/written sentences to compare/contrast the responsibilities or feature of their choosing, with 80% accuracy, in 4 out of 5 opportunities, by MONTH, YEAR.

5. Given a picture and label of a community helper, STUDENT will form a sentence by stating “has”, while selecting a material or attribute which is associated with the community helpers profession, with 80% accuracy, in 4 out of 5 opportunities, by MONTH, YEAR.
