IDENTIFY SETTING IN TEXT Task Cards “Task Box Filler” for Autism

To see ALL of our "Task Box Fillers", please visit the TASK BOX FILLER section under "Browse Work Tasks"!

This Task Card “Task Box Filler” focuses on identifying the setting in a story or reading passage, an important reading skill that many of our students are working on as an IEP Goal. Using familiar scenarios, students will read, or be read aloud to, and choose where the event or action is taking place (WHERE), by marking the correct picture response. The passages contain easy reader text with beginning sight words and is intended for children who have not yet mastered this reading skill.

NO VELCRO NEEDED!

WHY IS THIS SKILL IMPORTANT FOR ME TO TEACH MY STUDENTS?

Understanding “where” a story takes place, or where an event occurs, is included in academic standards. If your student is on grade level academic standards (as opposed to alternate standards or access points), being able to identify the setting of a reading passage is a skill each child will need to learn.

HOW DO I PUT THESE TASK CARDS TOGETHER?

Just print (preferably on white card stock paper for durability), laminate, and trim around each card! NO velcro needed!

HOW CAN I USE THIS ACTIVITY WITH MY STUDENTS?

If your class looks anything like mine, you will have students with different learning abilities. For more independent learners who are already reading, provide this task as an independent work task. You can check for accuracy when he/she has finished.

For students who are not yet readers, the teacher may read the cards aloud. All of the choice responses (three of them) are provided in pictures. This will be easier for the student to identify the setting.
