HOW WILL THIS ACTIVITY HELP MY STUDENTS LEARN THIS MATH SKILL?
Children focus and have greater interest in activities that include preferred visuals. Using candy canes to count (a familiar holiday symbol to most), our students are engaged for longer periods of time and the ability to focus on a task increases.
I HAVE KIDS IN MY CLASS THAT HAVEN’T REACHED THIS SKILL YET. HOW CAN I HELP THEM UNDERSTAND?
For students who are learning to count, may miss numbers in a sequence, or struggle with retaining a math skill, it is suggested that the teacher limits the numbers up to 5 and increase to the next number within a few days. Repeat this until the child has reached 20, or the number indicated on their IEP Goal or objective.
SUGGESTED IEP GOALS For Special Education Students:
Given tally marks which contain a visual counting guide, STUDENT will count tally marks up to twenty by matching the correct number card, as part of an independent work task, with 80% accuracy, in 4 out of 5 opportunities, by MONTH, YEAR.
