In my classroom, I have been able to have my fluent readers show that they understand new vocabulary, familiar events, and that they can expand upon their knowledge by responding to “wh” questions.
For my newbie readers, and even those who have not yet begun to read, listening comprehension is a very important skill. By listening and building confidence as they count and color, students find this to be a preferred activity.
Each page contains three responses (all of which will be used). The student will cut along the dashed borders. Practicing scissor skills is a goal for many students. They also learn that just a “dab” of glue will give them the results they need (that old “too much glue” problem is eliminated). Most of the booklets contain pictures to color and the student can practice using correct or appropriate colors, and coloring with less pressure to produce coloring that doesn’t devour the picture!
Oh, boy! That’s a great question! My students take at least three days to complete each booklet, which makes this set last for well over one month’s time. Your students will enjoy it and ask to continue (as mine do!).
Oh, YES! As most of my activities include IEP goals, this set is no exception. Here they are!
1. Given up to 5 sentences and a choice of three pictures, STUDENT will read the text and provide the correct picture response to three “wh” question/question symbols, with 80% accuracy, in 4 out of 5 opportunities, by MONTH, YEAR.
2. Given three simple questions (What/What is it, How many, What color), STUDENT will read or listen to the teacher read the text and cut and glue the correct picture response, with 80% accuracy, in 4 out of 5 opportunities, by MONTH, YEAR.
3. Given a picture containing up to 10 objects, STUDENT will count each object and say the total number, with 80% accuracy, in 4 out of 5 opportunities, by MONTH, YEAR.
4. Given a picture containing up to 10 objects, STUDENT will count to determine the total and read/cut and glue the number word, with 80% accuracy, in 4 out of 5 opportunities, by MONTH, YEAR.
5. Given a picture with up to 5 lines of text containing details (color, number, object name, who, where, when), STUDENT will independently complete the task to cut and glue the picture responses in the correct location and color the objects, with 80% accuracy, in 4 out of 5 opportunities, by MONTH, YEAR.
